NAPC Urges Stronger Demand Response Vision by US Government

The National Action Plan Coalition (NAPC) has criticized the United States government for lacking a clear strategy for implementing demand response and is urging both the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and national policymakers to better communicate the benefits of demand response to the American public. The NAPC was formed to drive action for the national demand response plan.

Metrum Partners with Exceleron on Smart Grid Payment System

Metrum has integrated its Utiliwise AMI/Smartgrid communications platform with Exceleron’s Prepaid Account Management System. Metrum’s reports that its Utiliwise platform is a “flexible, under-glass, true IP to the endpoint technology that leverages existing public wireless network infrastructure allowing users to strategically deploy endpoints and retrieve data as needed to support advanced programs.” Exceleron’s Prepaid Account Management System (PAMS) is a Web-based application that does not need on-site hardware or software installation.

Atlanta-based smart grid data analytics startup Verdeeco has secured $800, 000 in Series A funding to promote its cloud-based utility data solution. The company, which is associated with the Georgia Tech Advanced Technology Development Center (ATDC), has been working with a strategic number of utilities to aggregate and analyze data to make better informed business decisions.

AEP Joins with ECOtality and Walmart to Promote EV Charging Stations

ECOtality is collaborating with American Electric Power (AEP) on Ohio’s first Blink electric-vehicle charging stations. The Blink Pedestal chargers were installed at the Walmart/Sam’s Club in Columbus as part of AEP Ohio’s gridSMART initiative to promote energy efficiency.

Google Exploring Other Energy Opportunities

Google’s decision to shelve its home energy management app, PowerMeter, should not be taken as a sign the browsing giant is extricating itself from the power industry. Earlier this year, Google deployed its ultra-fast, one-gigabit-per-second broadband internet access to several cities, including Kansas City, Missouri, and Kansas City, Kansas. It also began collaborating with the Kauffman Foundation and the University of Kansas Medical Center to develop gigabit applications.

India Deploying Smart Mini-Grids

India has begun setting up computerized smart mini-grids powered with renewable energy sources to provide electricity in remote, inaccessible areas. Earlier this month the country’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) commissioned the country’s first ‘renewable energy-based smart mini-grid system’ at Gurgaon, outside New Delhi. Similar grids are commonly used in advanced and developing countries.

Petra Solar CTO Named EPIC Director

Petra Solar’s chief technology officer, Johan Enslin, has been named director of the Energy Production and Infrastructure Center (EPIC) at University of North Carolina at Charlotte. His appointment becomes effective August 1. Enslin will also continue as Petra Solar’s CTO.

Kyocera Takes Lead in New Mexico Smart Grid Project

Kyocera has been selected to participate in a smart-grid demonstration project in New Mexico, a collaborative effort between NEDO, the New Mexico state government, the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities, and a national research center run under the umbrella of the United States Department of Energy.
